If you have a housepet that likes to chew your cables, buy some of picrel in the thinnest gauge you can find to cover the individual cable. Tape the junction between the cable and cladding with 3M™ Conformable Bonding Tape 5073 (a.k.a. fabric wiring harness tape). Worked for me for 15 years and counting. Since this is Mastodon, inb4 "ohh but I have a macaque that likes to use her opposable thumbs to remove the cladding and chew through specifically the ground wire" -> sux4u, this advice is applicable to 99% of normal cases. Please enjoy your insane demon pet in silence.

One thing I find actually infuriating about GrapheneOS is their unexplained, unexplored, unquestionable religious mantra that mere enabling of developer tools or ADB is automatically responsible for every aberrant behavior exhibited by the OS rather than their insane paranoid security-at-any-cost philosophy. Yes, I'm sure using ADB to push some audiobooks to my device and turning off UI animations in dev tools is what caused my phone not to be able to run a 2FA tool and Firefox simultaneously, even though I've been doing that for 16 years on other devices, and in fact have another identically-configured Pixel 8a on the stock OS that does not so suffer. Strange choice to deride every user of a niche, highly-technical Android distribution as the stupidest, greenest neophyte possible.

The Pixel 8a (and presumably all > Pixel 5) under-screen fingerprint sensor works considerably better with a hydrogel screen protector rather than [even a Google-approved, €40] tempered glass unit. Really, what's the point of a €40 screen protector? The fuckin' OLED is €100 from iFixit.

Express, plus express on the washer, throw the first load on the line, express again, and throw the second load in the dryer. Oh, you have a house battery? Massive queues for fuel today, even for the more esoteric stuff like MGO and kerosene. The guy behind me at the MGO pump had 3x 50L jugs in the back of his hatchback which he filled up with road diesel. Anyway, I've now got enough MGO for a couple of weeks of heat, which I will try not to use unless absolutely necessary, since the next fill will be much more expensive. Need to get that PV heater installed ASAP!

Trying to decide if I should spend €150 on a used Pixel 8a 128GB to load GrapheneOS on, or just hope that the pressure campaign against Google succeeds and they back down. I can't really afford to lose access to all the activated apps on this 8a, and anyway I'll need a device with an attested OEM OS image around to participate in society after Ireland gets done ramming through British-style draconian Internet regulation and ID requirements.

There is a mass discussion on the Orange Website right now about the European implementation of mandatory digital ID and associated ban on the use of jailbroken or non-attested devices with the digital ID applications as well as Android’s impending blockade on unsigned sideloading. Broadly, I see only two camps represented:

people discussing how such systems can be technically implemented
people rabbling about how it’s an infringement of muh rights (lol, you’re European, you don’t have rights, you have temporary privileges) and how they’re gonna create some side channel to get around being spied on

Nobody is trying to engage with or steel man the government’s stated position (exoteric), nor to discuss how best to message people who are not technical. After all, if WhatsApp and Instagram still work, but now all The Children are protected, what’s the big deal?

Yes, let’s talk up a storm about European digital sovereignty and at the same time mandate that all denizens of the EU possess a smartphone running an unmodified operating system image produced and signed by one of two major U.S. corporations. Good job, Europe! We did it!

Wi-Fi 7 APs apparently tend to IDLE - IDLE, not spec power - at 17-38 watts. That's a minimum of €46-€103 *per year* in running costs for me. Plugging in a cable remains undefeated.
